About Maria
Maria was Managing Director of her own architectural commercial and domestic lighting company. After five years in this role, Maria’s special skills in management, negotiation and liaison along with her great love of film, theatre and art took her into the television and film areas where she worked for many years with great success.

Her credits with well known Melbourne-based production company Working Dog P/L include, Production Assistant on “The Late Show”, Assistant Producer and Casting Director on “Frontline” and “Funky Squad”. She then moved to Artist Services P/L working on concepts for television programs, both commercial and cable, and also produced a fundraising concert for Annita Keating in Sydney.

Maria was invited by Film Victoria to project manage the international entertainment’s “bible”, Variety Newspaper: “Melbourne Entertainment Town”, an international series which included London, New York and Miami. Following a successful launch Maria was promoted to Manager, Marketing Projects at Cinemedia (formerly Film Victoria). Other credits include acting as ambassador to Saul Zaentz (producer of The English Patient) at the 1997 Screen Producer’s Association of Australia (SPAA) Conference.

As a result of a serious car accident in 1997 Maria created the “Living With Trauma, Injury and Illness” program in conjunction with Melbourne psychologist, Dr Sandra Neil and physician, Dr Robert Silverberg. She has spoken extensively on national radio and television about the program and her work featured in many local and national print media. Her writings have been published both locally and internationally. In 2005, Maria co-authored an article for US psychology journal Affilia - McCarthy, M. and Weber Z. (2005) 'When Bodies Need Voices: Sharing Stories of Survival'. Affilia 20, 3, 368-372. Copies are available online.

Maria has also worked on the public speaking circuit and spoke at the University in Padua, Italy to the International Council of Psychologists at their 58th convention, entitled “It’s All About Relationships”, in July 2000. She secured sponsorship money from Relationships Australia for the airfare. Maria continued with this work until late 2001 before returning full time to lighting on a consultancy basis. During her convalescence Maria intermittently produced events, such as CityEdge2, an International Urban Design and Architectural Conference, in association with the City of Melbourne.

Maria started writing a book about her accident and the re-building of her life. After months of rehabilitation she returned to jogging (including three 14kms City to Surf fun runs in Sydney), and has returned to most sports. In keeping with her strong interest in film, theatre and art, Maria is a member of the National Gallery of Victoria, the Italian Cultural Institute and the Australian Film Institute. She has also competed in many fun runs, swims and triathlons and was a volunteer at the Association for the Blind as an on-air reader with 3RPH (Radio for the Print Handicapped).

Maria has a Certificate IV Assessment & Workplace Training BSZ40198 and CELTA (Cambridge Certificate in English Language – Teaching to Adults). She has extensive English as a Second Language (ESL) private tutoring and classroom experience. She has also taken Cross Cultural seminars. Additionally, Maria has co-written an ESL course book for international students who go on to study a vocational course.

Currently, Maria is studying at the University of Melbourne (Bachelor of Arts) and has achieved Honours throughout her course. Maria is also a Commonwealth-authorised Civil Celebrant.
